HB0149Enacted

Amends TCA Title 55, Chapter 4, Part 1.

Present law requires, among other things, that an issued registration plate be attached to a vehicle in a place and position that is clearly visible. A violation is a Class C misdemeanor, but a person charged with this may, in lieu of a court appearance, submit a fine of $10.00 for a first violation and $20.00 on any subsequent violations to the clerk of the court.

This bill exempts historic military vehicles from the requirement to display a registration plate on the vehicle. In lieu of displaying the plate, an owner or operator of a historic military vehicle must maintain the plate in the vehicle and produce the plate for inspection upon the request of a law enforcement officer. A historic military is a vehicle or trailer that:

(1) Is at least 50 years old at the time the application for registration is made;
(2) Was manufactured for use in any country's military forces; and
(3) Is maintained to represent the vehicle's military design and markings, regardless of the vehicle's size or weight.

ON MARCH 7, 2019, THE SENATE ADOPTED AMENDMENT #1 AND PASSED SENATE BILL 493, AS AMENDED.

AMENDMENT #1 changes this bill's requirement, described in (1) of the Bill Summary, to make this bill applicable to a historic military vehicle or trailer that is at least 25 years old, instead of at least 50 years old, at the time the application for registration is made.
