HB0289In Committee

Amends TCA Title 49.

Under present law, specifies that a student receiving a dual enrollment grant may enroll for one course per semester at an eligible postsecondary institution. However, the student may enroll in one additional course per semester at an eligible postsecondary institution as a dual enrollment student, if the student is a high school junior or senior and meets certain requirements. Financial assistance received for such an additional course per semester reduces the amount of any subsequent award of the HOPE scholarship on a dollar per dollar basis. Subject to the amounts appropriated by the general assembly and the net proceeds of the state lottery, the Tennessee student assistance corporation (TSAC) determines the award for a credit hour taken under a dual enrollment grant. The award must not exceed the cost per credit hour of courses taken at community colleges in the state university and community college system.

This bill requires TSAC to award $500 for each of the first four courses taken under a dual enrollment grant and to determine the award per credit hour for any subsequent courses taken under a dual enrollment grant. This bill retains the present law requirement that the award not exceed the cost per credit hour of courses taken at community colleges in the state university and community college system.

This bill will apply to students seeking dual enrollment grants for the 2019-2020 school year and each subsequent school year.
