HB0962112th GA (Historical)Introduced

Amends TCA Section 49-2-130.

This bill increases from one-half credit to one credit, the number of credits that may be awarded to a student for work completed in a release time course under a policy adopted by a local board. Present law authorizes local boards of education to adopt a policy that excuses a student from school to attend a released time course in religious moral instruction for no more than one class period per school day. Present law defines "released time course" as a period of time during which a student is excused from school to attend a course in religious moral instruction taught by an independent entity off school property. Also under present law, the local board may adopt a policy to award students credit for work completed in a released time course that is substantiated by a transcript from the entity that provided the released time course. If a board adopts such a policy, then a student may be awarded one-half unit of elective credit for the completion of each released time course. This bill increases the credit that may be awarded from one-half to one.
