Amends TCA Title 41, Chapter 21.

Under present law, when an inmate dies in the penitentiary, following a medical examination to ascertain cause of death, if the body is not applied for by the friends of the deceased, nor for medical and surgical research, within a convenient time, the warden is required to have the body decently interred in the burying place provided for the penitentiary. This bill instead authorizes disposition of an inmate's body by any means that is consistent with the present law concerning the disposition of dead bodies, including, following a holding period and notice, cremation. ON MARCH 14, 2022, THE HOUSE ADOPTED AMENDMENT #1 AND PASSED HOUSE BILL 1913, AS AMENDED. AMENDMENT #1 adds a requirement for the warden to also notify the county medical examiner or the state chief medical examiner.
