Amends TCA Title 49, Chapter 1; Title 49, Chapter 3 and Title 49, Chapter 6.

Present law establishes maximum class size standards by grade level and prohibits classes from exceeding the prescribed maximum size. The maximum class size for kindergarten through grade three (K-3) is 25 students. This bill prohibits, notwithstanding the provision discussed above, a school designated by the department of education as a priority school or focus school under the present law performance goals and assessments provisions from exceeding a maximum class size of one teacher per 15 students in K-2 beginning in the school year immediately following the designation until the school exits priority status or is no longer designated as a focus school on a subsequent list released by the department. If the department does not release school accountability designations for a previous school year until after a new school year has begun, the class size ratios under this bill will apply to the school year in which the designation was released.
