Amends TCA Title 16, Chapter 2, Part 5.

Generally, under present law, the twenty-third judicial district consists of the counties of Cheatham, Dickson, Houston, Humphreys and Stewart. The two incumbent trial court judges and the district attorney general currently residing in such counties continue to serve the twenty-third judicial district in their respective capacities. From 1988 and onwards, the qualified voters of the twenty-third judicial district elect an additional judge or chancellor to serve the court and as part of court as specified in current law.<br /> <br /> This bill maintains every provision of the present law. However, effective September 1, 2023, this bill creates an additional trial court in the twenty-third judicial district, where the type of court, the type of presiding judge, and part of court will be designated in accordance with current law.<br /> <br /> This bill requires the governor to appoint a person to serve as an additional judge or chancellor, and the person so appointed will serve in that capacity until September 1, 2024, or until the person’s successor is elected and qualified. At the August 2024 general elections, the qualified voters of the twenty-third judicial district will elect an additional judge or chancellor to serve until September 1, 2030, or until the person’s successor is elected and qualified. At the August 2030 general elections, and every eight years thereafter, the qualified voters of the twenty-third judicial district will elect an additional judge or chancellor for a full eight-year term.<br />
