Amends TCA Title 39, Chapter 17, Part 13.
Generally, under present law, an individual, corporation, business entity, or local, state, or federal government entity or agent thereof is authorized to do the following:<br /> <br /> (1) Prohibit the possession of weapons by any person who is at a meeting conducted by, or on property owned, operated, or managed or under the control of the individual, corporation, business entity, or government entity, including persons authorized to carry a handgun pursuant to an enhanced handgun carry permit or a concealed handgun carry permit; or<br /> <br /> (2) Restrict the possession of weapons by any person who is at a meeting conducted by, or on property owned, operated, or managed or under the control of the individual, corporation, business entity, or government entity by allowing a handgun to be carried in a concealed manner only by persons authorized to carry a handgun pursuant to an enhanced handgun carry permit or a concealed handgun carry permit.<br /> <br /> Present law requires notice of the prohibition or restriction permitted by the above provision to be accomplished by displaying the notice on a sign in prominent locations, including all entrances primarily used by persons entering the property, building, or portion of the property or building where weapon possession is prohibited or restricted. Present law requires the notice to be plainly visible to the average person entering the building, property, or portion of the building or property, posted.<br /> <br /> This bill clarifies that the notice referred to in the above provision must be no more than three feet from such entrances and must be mounted or placed such that the center of the sign is between 60 inches and 72 inches from the ground.<br /> <br /> SPECIFIC DESIGN REQUIREMENTS<br /> <br /> Present law requires a sign to be used as the method of posting the notice described in the above provisions. This bill adds that each sign must measure at least 22 inches high and 22 inches wide and have a red background and white lettering.<br /> <br /> APPLICABILITY<br /> <br /> This bill requires an individual, corporation, business entity, or government entity that, as of July 1, 2023, used signs to provide notice of the above prohibition to have until July 1, 2024, to replace existing signs with signs that meet the requirements of this bill.<br />
