Amends TCA Title 2 and Title 6.
Present law generally prohibits, subject to local approval, the election of a member of the legislative body of a municipality, a popularly elected school board, or any other similarly constituted and elected board or commission of a county or municipality through an election procedure requiring candidates to be nominated from a district and elected at-large. Present law exempts various counties and municipalities from such general prohibition based on population. This bill removes the population-based exemptions and the requirement for local approval from the general prohibition.<br /> <br /> ON APRIL 17, 2023, THE SENATE SUBSTITUTED HOUSE BILL 817 FOR SENATE BILL 526, ADOPTED AMENDMENT #1, AND PASSED HOUSE BILL 817, AS AMENDED.<br /> <br /> AMENDMENT #1 changes the effective date of this bill to January 1, 2024.<br />
