SPECIAL LICENSES PLATES FOR DISABLED VETERANS<br /> <br /> Present law authorizes one disabled veteran memorial license plate to be issued free of charge to any qualified applicant. One additional plate may be obtained by any eligible person upon payment of the regular registration fee for plates, as prescribed under existing law, and payment of 1/2 of the fee required for military cultural plates. Additional disabled veteran license plates may be obtained by any disabled veteran upon payment of the regular license fee for plates, as prescribed under existing law, plus the payment of a fee equal to the cost of actually producing the plate.<br /> <br /> This bill deletes the above provisions and, instead, authorizes two disabled veteran memorial license plates to be issued free of charge to a qualified applicant. Additional disabled veteran license plates may be obtained by a disabled veteran upon payment of the regular registration fee for plates, as prescribed under existing law, plus the payment of a fee equal to the cost of actually producing the plate.<br /> <br /> Present law authorizes a disabled veteran who is entitled to be issued a memorial registration plate, free of charge, to elect in the alternative for the issuance of a registration plate for holders of the Purple Heart, free of charge, for one motor vehicle authorized by existing law or one motor home, which is owned or leased by the disabled veteran. However, a disabled veteran must meet the eligibility requirements of existing law in order to be eligible for the issuance of a registration plate for a holder of the Purple Heart. This bill rewrites the present law to, instead, authorize a disabled veteran who is entitled under this bill to be issued two memorial registration plates, free of charge, to elect in the alternative for the issuance of two registration plates for holders of the Purple Heart, free of charge, for two motor vehicles authorized by existing law or two motor homes.<br /> <br /> This bill prohibits a second disabled veteran plate initially issued to, or renewed by, a recipient prior to July 1, 2024, from being subject to the regular registration fee or the cost of producing the plate, and requires such plate to be free of charge on or after July 1, 2024.<br /> <br /> HOLDERS OF THE PURPLE HEART<br /> <br /> Present law authorizes one additional special memorial registration plate for holders of the Purple Heart may be obtained by any eligible disabled veteran upon payment of the regular registration fee for plates, as prescribed under existing law, and payment of 1/2 of the fee required for military cultural plates. Additional plates may be obtained by any person entitled to receive the holders of the Purple Heart registration plate upon payment of the regular registration fee for plates, as prescribed under existing law, and the fee required for military cultural plates. This bill deletes this present law and, instead, authorizes additional plates to be obtained by a person entitled to receive the holders of the Purple Heart registration plate upon payment of the regular registration fee for plates, as prescribed under existing law, and the fee required for military cultural plates.<br /> <br /> This bill prohibits a second Purple Heart plate initially issued to, or renewed by, a recipient prior to July 1, 2024, from being subject to the regular registration fee or the cost of producing the plate, and requires such plate to be free of charge pursuant to this bill on or after July 1, 2024.<br />
