Amends TCA Title 8; Title 38; Title 50 and Title 56.
This bill prohibits a law enforcement agency from employing a peace officer unless the officer obtains, and continuously maintains, liability insurance to cover damages resulting from misconduct, including intentional, negligent, or willful acts, committed by the officer while acting in the scope of the officer's employment for the agency. This bill requires liability insurance obtained and maintained by an officer to comply with rules, adopted by the commissioner of commerce and insurance as required by this bill, that do the following: (1) Set a minimum coverage amount for a policy that allows for a reasonable number of victims to be compensated; and (2) Require a policy to state that the policy is provided in accordance with and is subject to the provisions of this bill.
