The Tennessee Illegal Immigration Act
Amends TCA Title 4; Title 7; Title 38; Title 39; Title 55 and Title 67.
Tennessee SB0006, titled "The Tennessee Illegal Immigration Act," aimed to require law enforcement agencies to request immigration detainers for individuals known to be unlawfully present in the U.S. and to maintain custody of those individuals until they were taken into federal custody or the detainer expired. If no detainer was received, the bill mandated that law enforcement transport the individual to a sanctuary city of their choice within 700 miles. Additionally, the bill included provisions for law enforcement agencies to report costs associated with detaining and transporting individuals and established a mechanism for reimbursement through federal motor fuel taxes.
